“The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:24
Jesus rocked the cultural boat when it came to women. In His day, women were looked upon as second-class citizens, property that didn’t require much attention or investment. But Jesus was different. He saw them with eyes that recognized their worth and significance, both on earth and throughout eternity.
Kenai’s ABC Pregnancy Care Center has lived out Jesus’ vision towards the women of the central Kenai Peninsula since 1985. The center’s director, Colleen Ward, said that the center is designed to show young women that they have purpose in life and that they are valuable and unique, as well as provide for their physical and relational needs. “We want them to know they are cared for, that they are safe, and that the truth will be spoken to them. Even our facility’s appearance and decorations are intended to speak these things to the women who walk through our door,” said Colleen. Sure enough, the central area of the facility looks more like a living room than a waiting room, and behind the neatly organized stacks of informational pamphlets at the front desk sits a volunteer, smiling warmly. The brightly colored curtains and pictures on the wall are comfortable proof of the many helping hands and attentive minds that have volunteered over the years.
Although Colleen is ABC’s only paid employee, there are over 15 women who consistently volunteer on a weekly basis. These women donate their time to provide a wide variety of services, including: pregnancy tests, ultrasound services, parenting classes, physical, emotional, spiritual support, confidential client advocacy, community services & resource information, maternity & baby items, and abortion recovery. Due to financial donors, these services are all provided at no cost to the client. Colleen referred to these donors as “a community of caring believers who have experienced Christ’s love and want to pass it on.”
Not only does the center support and come alongside women of the community, but they also believe that God has a very specific role for the father of a baby. Because of this, they have developed programs to incorporate the babies’ fathers into the process of birth, both before and after. One of these resources is “Earn While You Learn,” a program that allows parents to earn materials from the ABC supply closet (maternity and infant/toddler items) while attending workshops about pregnancy, parenting, and life skills.
Kenai’s ABC Pregnancy Care Center is currently raising money to move out of their leased suites and into a permanent facility. Check out how you can be a part of giving toward this exciting change at http://www.abcwecare.org/about As Colleen says, “Everything we do is founded in prayer. We want our clients to be covered and protected by prayer, so we have prayed our way through this process.” If you feel that you are unable to donate financially, we encourage you to join the volunteers at ABC Pregnancy Care Center in prayer as they look forward to expanding and advertising their ministry.
Ways you can pray for ABC Pregnancy Care Center and the community members they serve:
- Effectiveness in their outreach to the women and associated families they are led to serve
- Strength to build lasting relationships with women so they can know how to approach the women about Christ
- Protection, health and direction for their team of volunteers, staff and board members
- The Center’s “expansion project” as they pursue and raise the funds for their new permanent facility
ABC Pregnancy Care Center is located at 508 South Willow St, Suite B, in Kenai.
