Exciting God stuff in Homer! One Lord Sunday!!

Posted on May 1, 2015 by scott Posted in Recent Articles

It was almost twenty years ago that several Homer area pastors, struggling with the demands and difficulties of ministry, started meeting together to encourage and pray for one another. After a few years the pastors formed the Homer Ministerial Association (HMA) for the stated purpose to ‘promote unity and growth in the body of Christ, to pray for, and encourage pastors and church leaders.’ We have been meeting regularly ever since! Out of this gathering has grown an annual worship service, One Lord Sunday, where one Sunday a year many of the churches in Homer and Anchor Point put away their unique differences and celebrate what we have in common, Jesus Christ! Each year up to a thousand people gather at the local high school to worship together. For many years the local pastors shared the preaching and church members shared the worship leading but the last couple of years we have been bringing in nationally known speakers for a weekend seminar to coincide with One Lord Sunday and have them preach for us. Two years ago we brought in Gary Chapman who did the “Marriage You’ve Always Wanted” seminar and this year we brought in Chris Hogan with Dave Ramsey’s organization who did the “Total Money Make Over” seminar for us. In addition to this display of unity, the offering we take from One Lord Sunday funds the Ken Fisher Memorial Scholarship, established by the HMA as a means of expressing our values in the community by honoring a graduating high school Senior who has consistently lived out a Biblical value system. This years winners are Brandon Beachy and Cheyanne Smith.

Verse of the Day

When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” — Matthew 2:4-6 (NIV)
